AMALGAMATION SCHEME CONSIDERED.
The proposal emanating from the Council of Agriculture to link up the four main bodies controlling the interests of farmers of the Dominion into ono b’l, Federal council was discussed by the Dominion executive of tho New Zealand Farmers’ Union last evening r * ie « ub ’ icct was reported, on by Mr. G. L. Alaisliall (Marton), on behalf of the committee set up by the council, and Iw stntei that it was suggested that the proposed body should from time to time approach the'Government on behalf of the whole of the. producers, with regard to certain important matters which were of general interest to all, and which did not come within tho immediate purview of anv individual body. The scheme in its present form met with general opposition from members of the executive, who wore inclined to the opinion that the Now Zealand Farmers Union already provided the best political mouthpiece for the whole of the producers. At the same time it was indicatci that more modified proposals which did not encroach on the union’s preserves might possibly prove acceptable. . Accordingly, the following resolution was adopted on the motion of Mr. AV. B Matheson (Eketnhuna): —This executive favours a plan whereby when any of our representative bodies propose to | submit a case to the Minister nplrno mn4l be given to the oilier bodies, with an invitation to support the case The executive further agreed to attend a meeting of delegates from representatives of farmers’ bodies interested which is to bo held to-day to confer on the proposal.
