LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

WAR LOAN CERTIFICATES Sir, —From a paragraph in The Dominion’ a. few weeks ago I understood the Government wore willing to renew the above certificates for five years or a lesser term, particulars to be obtained from all 4 post offices. To-day, at tho General Pest Office I presented certificates for\Xso with a request that they should bo renewed for three years, but I was informed. that the term must be for five years, and not less than /hat. As I shall require the money in three years I had no option but to take the cash and 100k 1 eLsewherb to invest it. If investment companies can give a higher rate of interest for twelve months deposits, surety tho Government should be able to do likewise for a longer 'term. —I am, etc., , ' C.E.M.

HUTT GASWORKS Sir, —A number of statements have op-, peared in the Press recently with reference to the proposed Hutt gasworks, and some which have emanated from the very newly-formed Hutt Ratepayers* protective Association tend to give an entirety false impression of the importance of that body. The fact is that this association does not in any way represent pr reflect the opinion of the vast majority of the ratepayers of tho Ixxrongh. Tho statement has been made tliat this association was .formed at a “large meeting of ratepayers,” but I am informed that only about 22 persons were present, being rather less than one per cent, of the 2260 odd ratepayers of Lower Hutt, It cannot be too clearly understood by the association that Lower Hutt residents are determined io end tho !nconvenienco of being supplied with indiffereiit gas. in totally insufiteient quantity, and that the large majority of them are convinced that any further negotiations with Petone ire unthinkable. Mr. A. Ford, the expert with whom the council has now entered into a definite contract, has demonstrated to the satisfaction of most thinking people that Lower Huttty can erect its own works and run them at a handsome profit without any charge whatever on Hie rates, and to remain at the mercy of an outside borough for the supply of this very necessary commodity would be a huge blunder. It is to be hoped that all those ratepayers who helped to c.aft’y the gasworks proposal at the recent poll, and all others interested iii the advancement of tlie borough, will attend the public meeting to be held this week, and voice tlieir disapproval of this deliberate attempt to override the expressed will of tho majority.—l am, etc., PROGRESSIVE. Lower Hiftt, September 27. 1921.
