THORNDON RECLAMATION
IMPORTANT MATTER FOR CITY. The subject of the Thorndon reclamation and 'retaining wall was referred to . in a report presented to the Central Progress League by the secretary last night. Tho report states: — "A final agreement has been reached between the Harbour Board and Railway Department as to their respective shares and responsibilities, and there is no 'reason why this work should not bo started as soon as the .detailed plans ore prepared. The necessary surveys are now being taken, and if it is the wish of the Government to do this work, tenders may bo called and the work started by tile end of the year. legislation will be necessary defining the rights and responsibilities of the contracting patties, but if this is not ready for the coming session, it need in n\> way interrupt the carrying out of the work. So far as Wellington is concerned, this sea wall is easily the first public work. Its construction will take a long time, but the cost for the first year or two will not be great. When completed and the land reclaimed, it will alter the whole outlook, progress and prosperity of the city, and every possible influence should lx-’ brought to bear to have it started without delay. Tho Harbour Board is very anxious to see the work completed and is ready to do its share; in fact, would, I believe, take over the whole responsibility of carrying out the work if requested to do so.”'
