THE ARBUCKLE CASE
‘HEARING OF MURDER CHARGE. x, New York, September 23. The "New York Times” correspondent at San Francisco says that as Arbuckle was brought into the Police Court for the preliminary hearing of the murder charge against him/ he said to the reporters: "I wan not drunk at the party at my rooms. I did not\harm Mins Pappe and I am able to ' prove it.” Judge Lazarus ordered that the court room seats should be reserved for women only. Drs. Shelby and Oppuls, who examined the body after death, declared that external force was the cause of .death. ’Doccasod’s arms were bruised. One witness, Scmnach, who was present at the party, said that Arbuckle, in a prank, applied ice to Rappe’s body, but with no intention of injuring her. Rowell Sherman, who wns present at the "J>arty, made a deposition in New York, denying that he heard Rappo charge Arbuckle with having injured her. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. SERIOUS SET-BACKS TO DEFENCE. (Rec. r 'September 25, 11.5 p.m.) San Francisco, 24. , The defence suffered serious set-backs, the prosecution obtaining a statement from Seminacheu. regarding what Arhucklo said concerning Miss Rappe after nn incident which was of such a serious nature that it was made privately to the Judge.
