ACTIVITY DISPLAYED BY IMPORTERS. By Telenranh.—Pre«» A««oclatt«n. Christchurch, September 23. , In common with what is happening in other oenti'es, an eleventh-hour rush by importers to clear goods in lx>nd in anticipation of an increase of the Customs • tariff has developed in Christchurch. The bonds hare been practically cleared nt stocks of spirits and wines, and will soon be cleared of tobacco. Clearances of Ixiots have also been made on a big scale. There is very little drapery to clear, most: concerns having by nowpaid duty on their importations. Very little merchandise is now held in' bond I here. *
Dunedin merchants have made large i clearances of bended goods within the, past few days, not only in spirits, but', other linos on which Parliament may impose some extra duty as ths result of the tariff debate, which will probably b» one of the features of t'*e session. Ono . man, after paying in to the Customs on I'humday morning, expressed the opinion that’ as the common belief about extra duties had gathered in a big sum to t.ho Treasury there was the -less chanco o? instar! tor imposition.—" Star.”
