KING EDWARD

A STORY OF HIS PERSONAL TIE WITH UNITED STATES. The London "Times” has published the first part of a tribute to the memory of King Edward from tho pen of Sir Sidney Lee, who presents hitherto 'unpublished pieces of evidence regarding tho late Sovereign's judgment and prudence in matters of. international importance which are still stirring tho liveliest public interest. ..One hitherto unrecorded incident in King Edward’s career, which Sir Sidney Lee now reveals, has reference to his strong personal tie with America. At the close of 1895, when President Cleveland threatened a breach of AngloAmerican relations, Mr. Pulitzer, the proprietor of the "New York World,” who had met tho Prince at Homburg, look the unconventional course of telegraphing both to the Prince and to the present King George for an expression of their views of the sharp crisis. Tho King drafted the following reply: "I thank you for telegram. I earnestly trust nnd cannot but believe present crisis will ho arranged in a manner satisfactory to both countries and will he succeeded by same warm feeling of friendship as has existed between them for so many years.” The Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury, deprecated the Prince’s interference and advised tlint Mr. Pulitzer’s journalistic enterprise should in this instance be foiled. No reply from the Prince reached New York, and tha incident nnd the Prince’s action are now ravealad for the first time.
