MAGISTRATE’S COURT
About a fortnight ago the police prosecuted a number of women for feeing idle and disorderly in that they consorted with reputed thieves and prostitutes. The evidence showed that tho women frequented a house in Tui Street, and the names of a number of men were mentioned as also being frequenters of tho house. Yesterday the police proceeded against Bernard Tier, alias Bolton, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person in that he habitually consorted with reputed thieves and prostitutes. Tier was one of tho men found in the house in Tui Street. Mr. W. E. Leicester, who appeared for the accused, said that Tier was not without means for he had .£6O in the bank. After hearing counsel further, the Magistrate said that accused's previous good character • was in his favour, and perhaps the experience of that morning would be a lesson to him. Ho warned tho accused to find something better to do of an evening than visiting such places. The Information was dismissed. A labourer named Ellis Norris was convicted of being drunk ami disorderly on the ferry steamer Duchess. Ho was fined 10s. nnd ordered to pay costs amounting fo 13s. Tor trespassing on the Trenth.am racernifrse on tho occasion of the hist race meeting. Charles Lawson was lined ■ids. nnd costs amounting to ~£1 IBs.
