PIAKO LEAVES NEWPORT NEWS. The Piako. bound from Liverpool t« New Zealand ports, arrived at Newport News on September 20, and left the same day. She is due at Auckland about October 25 and later will visit Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, jmd Bluff.
JOAN CRAIG AND IHUMATA, Messrs. Charles M'Arthur and Co., Ltd., advise that tho Joan Craig arrived atj Wanganui on Thursday from Sydney, and la due here on Tuesday. She has coal for discharge at Wanganui and poles and eleepers for here. The Ihumata is due at Wanganui with a full load of coal from Newcastle nett woejc. and her future movements are indefinite. She is to the same agency a« tae Joan Craig. ATHENIC SAILS. The S.S. and A. liner Corlnthfc sailed ’for Southampton and London yesterday. She is omitting the usual call at Newport News. EASTERN PLANET NOT FOR NEW ZEALAND. Messrs. Dalgety and Co. advise that the Eastern Planet is not coming to New Zealand to load now. but will take n cargo «f wheat for Europe from Australia. ESSEX TO LOAD. Tl'ft Federal Line advise that, the Essex U to leave Sydney Un October 15 for New Zealand to load for the West Coast of England. She is expected to leave New Zealand finally about November 15. RUAHINE AT SOUTHAMPTON. 7*llo New Zealand Shipping Company** liner Rualiine arrived at London on September 22. THE FERRY BUN. The Wahine in due at Lyttelton from Port Chalmers on October 8, and will leave there tor Wellington that evening, being due here on October 9. The Maori, which the Wahine will relieve, will sail from ’-ere for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers on October 7. ULIMAROA DUE TO-DAY. A wireless message received from the Ulimaroa. cn route from Sydney, states that, the ressel should arrive in the stream at Wellington at 1 o'clock this afternoon. She will not berth until Monday, as a precautionary measure against the plague. A vessel will go out to the ship during the afternoon to land passengers and their hand luggage. The Ulimaroa’s next trip to Sydney will be made from‘Wellington at noon on Wednesday next. , OTAKI LEAVES GIBRALTAR. The New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Otaki left Gibraltar for Cardiff on Wednesday last. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. The death occurred at Dunedin recently of Oantgin Solomon Bryant, aged 69 years, a welLknown master mariner and marine surveyor. He was born in Bristol, went to sea at the age of 17. and served his apprenticeship on the barque Excelsior. Ho was second mate of that vessel in 'B7B. He later served as second officer on the steamers Kura, Ba.toum. an’S' 5 *, Bakuin, and as chief officer on the barque Birker (18921, barque Clarence, barque George Croshaw. balnue Star < f the East, and baroue Gratitude. He was mostly engaged in the trade between China and England when serving as a young officer, first came to New Zealand in the we”-Itnown American Bailing vessel fits? of the East. He subsequently visited Dunedin and Lyttelton in that 'vessel. In later years he was master of the threcmaeted schooner Ocean Ranger and barque Onyx. On one occasion he sailed the Onyx over the Kaipara bar and through the narrow waters of that tidal harbour without the services of- a pilot. This feat alone stamped him as a most canable navigator. He made several voyages to the Macouarie Islands when chief officer of the Gratitude. The late Captain Bryant bod been employed on the Dunedin and Port Chalmers, waterfronts for many years after his retirement from the sea. He had been ailing for some time past. Mr. If. Swan, chief engineer, has joined the Kurow. and Mr. J. D. Moore, third engineer.■ has left the same vessel. z Mr. E. V. Cox has joined the Mapourlka as second mete, vice Mr. A. B. Anderson. Mr. J. E. Warwick Has joined; the Kini ms second mate in place of Mr. H. Sheehan. The following vessels were expected to be within range of the undermentioned wireless stations last night:—Awanui— Ventura. The Calm, due to-day from Lyttelton, is to sail for Wanganui on Monday, and is duo back hero on Wednesday. She rtiould sail the seme day for Lyttelton, Timaru and Dunedin. The Alexander is due on Thursday from Wanganui to sail for Nelson. Westport, and Grey mouth the same day. The John is due to.-morrow from Lyttelton. and is tn sail for Wanganui on Monday. She is due back on Wednesday to load for southern ports.
