AUCTION SALES FORTHCOMING FIXTURES. ’TUESDAY.. Levin Tarda—l2 noon—Stock Sale. BUTTER AND CHEESE LONDON MARKET DEPRESSED. (Rec. September 23, 9.10 p.m.) London, September 23. The butter market is, very depressed. The reduction in Government prices, which will be in force till September 30, has failed to stimulate demand. The quality of free Australian recently arrived is variable. Some is very fishy and only saleable considerably below the Government price. The best free is selling fairly well. ; Large arrivals of ?Jew Zealand and Canadian cheese have knocked the bottom out of the market. New Zealand, white 102 s. per cwt., coloured 965. to 100 s.; Australian, white 965. to 100 s., coloured 925. to 91s.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. GRAIN CROPS IN CANTERBURY BENEFICENT RAIN CAUSES ELATION. Jly Telegraph—Press As«oeia + ion Christchurch, September 23. The general feeling is one of elation at the recent beneficent rain, though it nipped in the bud an improvement in oat and chaff values that promised, with Vie dry .weather in the north and consequent feed shortage, to develop into a mild boom,-'particularly for chaff.' The rain, however, effectually banished all apprehension, and the market has steadied up. Oats are a shade easier, though a fair amount of business is lieing done, and 2s. UJd. at country stations is available for bright heavy A grade Gartons. Chaff is worth from .£3 ss. to .£3 10s. on rail. The activity has died down,' but in any case the offerings had not been large. The opinion is held that the rain has made a tremendous difference to the wheat prospects. The area under cron has been estimated at 350.000 acres, CO per cent, more than last year, and one observer puts down the prospective increase iir yield, as'a result of the timely rain, at quite six bushels to the acre more than it promised a fortnight before. Potatoes are firmer. Up to 412 2s. Cd. is the value at country" stations for pit potatoes. RABBIT PEST ACTIVITIES OF AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT. The Director-General of Agriculture, Dr, C. J. Reakes, and the Director of the Live Stock Division of the Agricultural Department, Colonel A. R. Young, are visiting Otago, ? for the purpose of conferring with representatives of farmers’ organisations relative to Tabbits and the methods to be adopted to destroy them. Proposed amendments to the Act governing the destruction of the vermin are also being considered. BRADFORD TOPS MARKET QUOTATIONS VERY FIRM. (Rec. September 23, 9.10 p.m.) London, September 23. The Bradford wool market is more active, and quotations for top yarns are very, firm.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. WAIRARAPA SHOW The Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society advertise their 44th annual show, to be held at. Carterton on October; ; 26 and 27 next. Entries close with the secretary (Mr. L. 11. Smart, P.O. Box 25, Carterton), on October 12, and schedules may lx; obtained on' application. The society’s shows are popular with breeders throughout tho North Island. This year the Schedule has been framed on the usual liberal linos, and many new classes, have been added. Further additions have .been made to the already extensive buildings on the grounds since last show, and exhibitors can rely on their stock being well cared for and protected. i STUD STOCK IMPORTED Two! Ayrshire bulls imported from Scotland by Mr. D. Buchanan, of Eden Park, Palmerston North, were released from quarantine this week. The animals were bred from what is now called the "hew Ayrshire" strain. *■ - theFshearers The secretary of the Shearers’ Union, Mr. Grayndler, returned to Wellington from the south yesterday, and will leave for tho Rangitikei district this morning. The shearers in the south, said Mr. Grayndler. had resolved not to accept employment below the policy agreed to by the council of the New Zealand' Workers’ Union, viz., last year’s rates. In a Press Association telegram from Gisborne, said Mr. Grayndler. Mr. AV. G feherra.tt referred to section 31 of the now award (Act). Section 31 referred to did not apply in this ease, according to Mr. Grayndler. It was merely used to' cajole ignorant ■ Maori shearers. The Court’s award, Air. Grayndler urged, was not given a Dominion application- The award made by Mr. Justice Frazer was only applicable so far to the Wellington industrial district, and until such time as the Court again sat it would be impossible for last year’s rates of pay to be departed from. The Court, he urged, have no power, Wnaiout the sanction of both parties, to make a Dominion award., The Court must sit in the respective districts before an award can bo made for those districts.
