AN ILLUMINATING EXPERIENCE. “Small wonder that apples are fetching luxury prices,’’ remarked a prominent Wellington business man to a Dominion reporter yesterday. "The other week a friend of mine at Motueka sent me a bushel case of apples as a gift. His generosity cost me exactly 7s. 7d., as this interesting little document shows.” With this he produced a receipted account showing that he had paid the following “bill of costs’’ on accepting delivery of the apples ■ — Freight from Motueka. to' Nelson, 3s. 6d.; wharfage at Wellington, 6d.; cartage from wharf at Wellington, 3s, 7d.; total, 7s. 7d. Motueka charges were not included as tho donor of the apples delivered the fruit at the steamer’s side free of cost. "What the apples would have cost mo had. I. purchased them from tho grower may well lie imagined,” oom-, mented ’the recipient of the apples .“The freight was high enough for the little j.aupt .across the the really ■classic ‘touch’ about the whole affair, is tho carrying coinpany’s charge of 3s. 7d. for .carting tho apples, ' somo - 390 yards 1”
