OTAGO V. WELLINGTON FOR RANFURLY SHIELD ■■ —- - / At Athletic Park this afternoon two old-time rivals in Otago and Wellington will meet in a centest for tho Ranfurly Shield, and the local team is considered by many to have ahead of it the hardest provincial match erf this season. The visitors aro very keen to win the trophy, and are putting in a strong side. By their defeat of Taranaki, Wairarapa, and Southland they have shown that the football in the south is back to the old standard, when Otago were tho mainstay of South Island football. Tho curtain-raiser will be a match between Wellington and Christchurch Bible Unions. As tho local team contains many senior players and junior representatives, a good exhibition is expected. THE OTAGO TEAM The Otago team was selected yesterday afternoon, as follows: —
Full-back: E. Watson. Three-quarters: E Stewart, G. Owles, F. 'Ward. Five-eighths: F. Perry, V. Hawke. Half-back: F. M'Naughton. Wing-forward: W. Knox. Forwards: F. Highly, W. Coombes (hookers), A. Pattison (lock), R. Richardson, C. Sonntag, 11. Harty, C Davidson. Emergencies': Forwards, J. Wilson, C. Boyd; backs, J. Mackie, T. Watson. Mr. St. J. J. Dunne is tho manager of the visiting team. Duncan and Fea, the New Zealand, representatives, wore unable to come north for the match. 1 SENIOR CADET TOURNEY Following aye to-day’s fixtures for the Senior Cadet Rugby tournament:— 42nd Company v. 26th Company, Lyall Bay, No. 1,11.30 p.m.; 36th Company v. 21st. ' ( DOMINION DAY RUGBY An attractive programme has been prepared for Dominion Day, the net proceeds of the matches going to the Unemployment Fund. At 12.45 p.m. Wellington and Christchurch Banks will meet; at 2 p.m. Law Offices will meet Insurance Offices; and at 3.15 p.m. Telegraph will meet Post Office. The Wellington Banks’ team is composed entirely of senior players, and the Law and Insurance teams are mainly representatives, ex-representatives and senior players This latter* match» naa created much interest in former seasons. The Post Office and Telegraph match is expected to produce fotball of a high standard, as these Department? supply many of tho present senior players as well as reps., and both teams have played several games in tho Public Service tournament. It is hoped that the worthy object will receive support. PIPER TO PLAY FOR NORTHAMPTON (Rec? September 23, 7.50 p.m.) London, 'September 23. Piner, the New Zealander, will play Rugby ‘ for Cable Assn. SEVEN-A-STDE TOURNEY. The draw for the first round 1 of the Methodist Bible Class seven-a-side tournament at Emerson Street Park took place on Thursday evening, and some good games are anticipated. They will be its follow:—Northland v. Donald M'Lean Street (senior), Thorndon v. Taranaki 'Street (junior), Trinity (junior) v Taranaki Street (senior A), Kaiwarra v Donald M'Lean Street (junior), Lower Hutt v. Trinity (senior); Taranaki Street (senior), a bye. ’ « The referees will be Messrs. Swift, Blackburn, and Hill.
