POVERTY BAY WIN SEMI-FINAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, September 19. Poverty Bay defeated Hawke’s Bay in the semi-final of the hockey tournament by 2 goals to 1. The winners were completely extended, and had it not been for exceptionally fine efforts of individual Poverty Bay players a different tale would have had to be told. Hawke s Bay made the pace for the greater part of tho game, their fast forwards, particularly on the wings, putting in fine work, but ill and around the circle superior • stick work kept them hemmed out. Poverty Bay’s backs were undoii'btedly superior. Time and again Miss G. Newy’s and Mrs. Lynex’s long hard hits cleared beautifully and got the forwards on the move l . Miss F. Hill was the star performer of tho Poverty Bay eleven, with dribbling work. Misses E and K. Het and Trotter also played outstanding torward games, while Miss Gallagher was particularly good at goal. For the losers, Mrs. Happy and Misses M Buiden (in goal), Mayo, Lean, and Brabazon were always prominent. . Early in the game Miss Mayo seized on opportunity and led the Black and Whites down the field, keeping the ball well under control. She reached the goal, and being intercepted she passed, but secured again, and with a well-judged shot beat Miss Buiden and scored. Hawke’s Bay continued to press tor some time, but the Red and Black comDinat.imi l:ept them out. Eventually Miss Hill, by persistent attacks nnd Miss E Hei's assistance, reached the circle with a passing dribbling rush. Shooting a strong high one. she netted and evened the score. Up to half-time Hawke s Bay kept up a steady pressure, but were prevented from scoring by the solid defence of Misses Hill, E. and K. Hci. Hawke’s Bay opened up the second spell rmterminedlv. and put the Reds hard on the defensive. Eventually Miss Hill accepted a pass and cleared off down the field and found the net. giving sticks in the process. The game flew up and down the. field in a most exciting mannor. Eventually Miss K. Hei centred to Miss E. Hei who slammed home a low hard one. which proved to be the winning shot. A little later Miss Jones (Poverty Bay) received the full foice of a powerfully-hit ball in the forehead, but after a short rest pluckily continued the game, and was applauded. Play continucd up and down the field, with anxious moments for both goalkeepers, until the final whistle. , , . Poverty Bav will meet Wellington in the final at i 0.30 a.m. to-morrow (Tuesday). _______
