THE ARMAMENT CONFERENCE
UNITED STATES NAVY MUST NOT BE NEGLECTED CONSTRUCTION OF MORE SUBMARINES URGED By Telegraph—Preus Auuoclatton —Oonyrieht (Rec. September 19, 9.5 p.m.) New York, September 18. Mr. Denby (Secretary of the Navy) is urging further development of the submarine units of the Navy. This, on the ev6 of the armament conference, is regarded as a warning to the country that despite any arrangements to limit armaments, the fighting units of the Navy must not be neglected. Mr. Denby points out that the United States is lacking in a mine-laying submarine fleet and long-cruising, large-calibre gun submarines. Ho asks for the construction of three each of these types, on the ground that they aro highly important to JJie country’s national defence. Mr. Benby’s recommendations are also regarded—as an answer to the reports of spirited navy-building by foreign nations. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. INTERNATIONAL-DISARMAMENT ADVOCATED BY SENATOR LODGE. (Rec. September 19, 9.5 p.m.) Naw York, September 18. According to a Hartford, Connecticut, message, Senator Lodge, commenting upon a speech by Senator M'Lean, said ho agreed wi|h the latter’s statement to the effect that he was encouraged to believe that "disarmament will be possible when man becomes intelligent as well as civilised'.” .
