Tho Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Internal Affairs and acting-Minis-tcr of Finance, spent the week-end in the Wairarapa, as the guest of Mr. C. F. Vallance, of Kahumingi, returning to the city yesterday'. The death is reported of Mr. b. Wyllie, headmaster of the Waitara School.

Mr. I’. C.', Garnham, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Hamilton, has received notice of his transfer to the inspectors’ department of the bank in Wellington. Mr. Garnham established the business of the bank in Hamilton in 1911, and has been in charge of the business since that date. Ho will leave for »Wellington shortly. Mr. R. Guy, of Wellington, is to relieve Mr. Garnham.

Mr. W. J. Hitching, who has resigned .his position with Messrs. Abbott, Oram, and On., toigo into business on his own account at Martilkborough, was on Thursday evening presented by the combined staffs with an oak roll-top office desk. Tho presentation was made by Mr. F. T. Castle, who referred io Mr. Kitching’s long and faithful service, his good business qualifications, and popularity with his fellow workers; and wished him success in his new venture. Mr. Hitching,'in his reply, expressed keen regret at severing a connection extending over a-period of fifteen years. Tho London Gazette announces that Captain Newenham Robert de la Cour Cornwall R.D., R.N.R., has 'been appointed to be Royal Naval Reserve aide de camp to the King, in succession to Captain Sir Bertram Hayes, K.C.M.G., d's.O , R.D., A.D.C., R.N.R., to date June ’3O Captain Cornwall is a New Zealander, having been born in aaianuki. and is at present in command or tho Otaki, which left Naples on September 5, homeward bound from Australia, die has been in the service of the New Yi’iiland Shipping Company for many years, going, first as_an apprentice, and has held command of many of this line s vessels. During'the war he served aboard various British battleships.

Writing from Santa. Barbara (Southern G'tilifoniia), Mr. Harold Gregson, the Auckland organist, states that he has been engaged by ‘the civic authorities of San Francisco to give recitals at the Auditorium there. JCdwin Lemare finished his, term as city organist in 'ban Francisco in July, and they wished Mr. Gregson to commence his recitals in August, but ho hud then made arrangements to visit Southern California. Mr and Airs Gregson intend to leave San Irancisco by the Tahiti on October 28, arriving here about Novemlier 19. Mr. James Saunders died at Gonville recently. Deceased was associated with ' Messrs. J. B. Gilberd and Sons in the establishment in Wanganui of the wellknown soap works. 110 subsequently accepted an appointment in Auckland its manager of tho manufacturing department of the Union Oil, Candte and Soap Company. Mr Malcolm Brown, who died on Saturday at the age of 88 years, was a very old resident of the Lake district (Southland). He was chiefly engaged in farming. Deceased took part in tho Crimean War, and subsequently served with tho British troops iu India at the time of the Indian Mutiny, taking part in the siege of Lucknow.
