BOWLS

OPENING OF THE SEASON. The week-end downpour has been very beneficial to the various bowling greens in Wellington and the suburbs. In cases where top-dressing and resowing had been left rather late, the young grass was not coming on so woll as it should at this time of the year, owing to some six weeks of fairly dry, warm weather. The rain has put new heart into tho growth, the result of which will be seen almost immediately. Time is drawing on, and bowlers are beginning to furbish up their gear for the summer days to be. Tho Eastbourne and Karorl Clubs have decided to open their greens on Saturday next, and tho Wellington, Newtown, nnd Victoria Clubs ( have fixed their openings for October B.'Some of tho suburban clubs will open on October 1.
