RETURN OF MEMBER OF SPll'Z- ‘ BERGEN EXPEDITION. (Rec. September 11, ' London, September 10. Mr. Ralph Segnit has returned from Spitzbergen, —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Mr Segnit, who is a South Australian student at Balliol College, Oxford, and secured honours in-the final examination for geology, being awarded the BurdcttCoutts scholarship of two years in geology and science, accompanied the Oxford University’s expedition to Spitzbergen, as assistant geologist. The expedition which is the first of its kind that has been arranged at Oxford, is devoted to exploration in zoology, geology, and botany. Spitzffiergen is a group of islands in tho Arctic midway between Greenland and Nova Zemlya. The islands are covered with perpetual snow and glaciers. Dunn" the ten winter months mercury freezes and from October 22 to 1 ebruary 22 the sun never rises above the horizon. The flora is richer than' in any ’other country in the same latitude and comprises more than 120 species The islands are visited by whalers, for the numerous whale?, white bears, and seals on the coast. Reindeer are found in some parts, and there are several species of migratory birds.] _™«,
