SALES OF SUGAR

A NEW REGULATION ORIGIN OF IMPORTED SUGAR TO BE DISCLOSED The Hon. E. P. Lee, Minister of Industries and Commerce, stated yesterday that tho Government had recently had under consideration the position with respect to tho sale in New Zealand of sugar refined outside the Dominion. It had come to the knowledge of the Government that sugar refined in other countries was being offered for sale in New Zealand and) was being purchased by the public, no doubt, under the impression that it was of New Zealand manufacture. "This foreign sugar is being sold at the price fixed by the Government for sugar refined in Auckland, although no of tho same quality as the New Zealand sugar,” said Mr. Lee. "The Goyeminent has decided that the public should bo under no misapprehension as to the sugar that they are purchasing, nnd with a view to avoiding prehension it is considered! desirable that persons selling sugar not refined in New Zealand should bo compelled to disclose to' purchasers the fact that the sugar.is of foreign manufacture. An Order-in-Council is therefore being issued providing thlat with respect to all future sales of sugar tho seller must, unless it is of New Zealand manufacture, disclose by a statement on the wrapper the country of origin. “This Order-in-Council will take effect immediately, and the public may therefore be assured that in future unless notification is given by ft label’ on the wrapper that the sugar is of foreign manufacture it is the product of the refinery at Auckland. Substantial penalties are imposed by legislation for any breach of these orders.” . A Gazette Extraordinary issued last evenins notified that it shall not be lawful'for any person, firm, or company to sell or offer for sale sugar refined outside the Dominion of New Zealand unless each separate package in which such sugar is delivered to the purchaser bears the word "sugar,” preceded by the name of the country in which the sugar contained in that package was refined.
