POPLAR COUNCILLORS
REASON FOR REFUSING TO LEVY RATES PAYMENTS FOR UNEMPLOYED RELIEF By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. Augustt 30, 10.30 p.m.) London, August 30. Unless the writs issued should bo suspended, thirty Poplar councillors will go to prison on September 1 for refusing to levy rn.i--s which will total £300,000 by Christmas. The councillors’ case is that unemployment relief is costing tho borough nearly £6OOO per week, and the unemployment is due to national and international causes, therefore wealthy boroughs should contribute' towards the burdens of the poorer areas. The councillors are confident that their imprisonment will immediately be followed by a no-rent st-ike. Meanwhile tho Camberwell and Islington Guardians are paying unemployed relief ainounting'to £3 18s. 6d. per week to married men with six children, and Berniortdsey is paying £4 5.i. In Hackney unemployed men with six children are claiming £4 Us. per week, and similar applicants in Shoreditch demand £4 13s. These payments are frequently higher than the workers’ wages, raising the query "Why work ?”—Reuter.
