CIVIC ORGANISATION
A MOVEMENT OF ADVANCEMENT.
The Wellington Civic League, which ‘has tal/sn (for Its potto: FAdvnnce. Wellington! Love of Our City the Supreme taw,” has held two meetings of the provincial executive. Since the league was formed on Wednesday last Air. G. Mitchell, M.P., has been appointed chairman, and Mr- D. M/taren acting-secretary. ( At the first meeting tho associations ‘of Hataitoi, Island Bay, Karori,' Rosoneath, and Oriental Bay were each invited to appoint one representative on the executive. One association has already done so, and the others aro considering the matter. The league hae accepted an invitation for two of its speakers to address the meeting of tho Rose.neath and Oriental Bay Association early in September, and it is probable that Mr. G. Mitchell, M.l’., and Mr. JI. Carr, will be tho. speakers. ' A move has been made for a conference with the executive of the Town Planning Association. The league has appointed six of its members and hap invited the assoaiation’s representatives to meet and confer with them for the purpose of effecting closer unity. As the league’s constitution provides for the carrying on of voluntary work with the purpose of securing effective city plan-1 ning, it is hoped that the Town Planning Association will join forces in this field of activity. The league’s fees of membership have been fixed at X2 2s. for associations and a, minimum of ss. per annum for individual members. A. number - of business men in the city who have been seen have expressed their sympathy with the plan of the league, and will accord it support. One of the first practical steps taken by tho league is io s°t up a committee, consisting of Messrs. G. ‘Mitchell, ALP.. L. C. Chisholm, and P. iC. Watt, with instructions to cooperate with others; in an endeavour to secure the retention of Mason's Gardens (Hutt) for the public. The committee will interview, the Forestry Departmedt and take any other steps necessary. A i Tile league has other plans Of work in hand, this being biit a brief report of its first week’s operations.
