DANNEVIRKE MEETING HUNT CLUB CUP WON BY NICOMAR. By Telegraph —Special Oorreepoudent. Dannevirke, August 24. The Dannevirke Hunt Club meeting was held to-day in showery weather. The attendance was moderate and the track holding. The totalisator handled .£13,057, compared with .£13,552 tor the meeting held in June last.
Nicomar, Royal Gift, Nukurau, and Sir Alba were scratched for the Hunters’ Hurdles, and Birkenvale, with A. M’Donald in the saddle, saw a short price, while there was plenty of support for Te Maire, Toddy, and Tornea in That drder. Tornea led 'Toddy and Te Maire over the first, few fences, but the latter jorued the leader at tho half-mile, and, with Lldenholiu, bid over the last fence, but ih« ran it down badly, and Tornea gained several lengths. In a great finish the latter got the decision by a uose Irom Te Maire, with LTdeufiolui close up. Oak Itoso was fourth. The decision of tho jud"e was not well received, as it looked as if Te Maire had won "by a head. There was a very big field in the .I nal Stakes, but tho public fined the issue down to Tinihanga and Tolerance, the pair were in the van all the way, but in tho straight the Boniform gelding came away, and won easily from Tinihanga, who was doing her best, to boat Marzonia. Demoness was third. , Tho Hunt Cup was a disappointing affair. Coolpan was made favourite in a very weak field. He led with Tornea for a circuit, when the latter lost his rider, but was remounted. Nicomar took charge with a mile to go, and ho won very easily from Tornea, who stayed on and beat the tiring Coolpan. Rococo fell- A protest was entered against the winner for runing inside a flag, but it was dismissed on the grounds that the riders had not been informed as to tho correct course. . ~ Black Art started favourite in the Hack Flying Handicap, and, ridden by C. Stowe, he won in grand style. Doric led Conziska and Makere into the straight, but tho favourite then came through on the outside and won well. Hallucination was second, and then came Dbric and Makere. A field of eleven contested the Hunters’ Steeplechase, and after a good race Master Oriflamme won handily from Scimitar, who had been on the premises all the way. Taihape was going well, but he jumped badly at the second ie*! CQ from home, and Ibst his position, .lhe Hound, Martinello, .and Hurangi were all prominent in tho first circuit, but they failed to see out the fast pace. Tigrinia was the only scratching toi the Oi’ingi Welter Handicap, which was the best betting race of the day. Printemps was the actual favourite but there was strong support for Iruthtul, Admiral Codrington, aind Toa Taua. At tho start Automoana led Admiral Codrington, with Truthful handy. Admiral Codrington took charge rounding the bend, and he won in the commonest canter from Truthful, who beat Pruntemps by a head. Automoana was fourth. Toddy, who had raced earlier in the dav, was taken out of th© Bracelet, the public went heavily for Royal Gift, who was backed like a certainty, with Sunray second choice. The good thing did not come off, but it was only on oilcount of bad luck, for his rider got ]y left, and at one stage was giving the leaders a furlong start. Sunray only ’had a head to spare when the post was reached, while Sir Alba was the same distance awny in third place. Black Art was saddled up a second time in the Hack Welter Handicap, and though he looked the best of good things ho was allowed to pay a false price owing to the strong support for several of the others. The favourite was always well placed, and in the straight he came out and won easily from Patuki. DETAILED RESULTS. By Telegraph —Prese Association.
