ANOTHER WIN FOR SOUTH AFRICANS BAY OF PLENTY DEFEATED SCORE 17 POINTS TO 9 By Telegraph—Press Association. Rotorua, August 24. Four thousand spectators witnessed the Springboks v. Bay of Plenty match at Arawa Park to-day. The weather was fine, but a strong south-east breeze was blowing. The ground was in good order. The Bay of Plenty representatives gave a display much superior to that shown against New South Wales, I their tackling being especially good. Tho I forwards held their own, but the screw- | ing tho scrum by the visitors gave the . latter the ball on several occasions. The Springbok’s’ line work, especially their kicking, was very good. The combination and speed of their backs gave them a win by seventeen to nine. A feature of the game was the large number ot free-kicks awarded Bay of Plenty through the visitors’ infringements ot the rules. Do Villiers started the game, kicking into touch. After a senes ot passing rushes and scrums Bay ot Plenty secured, and Montgomery the ball to Wilson, who gained ground bv kicking into touch. At this stage the local men were awarded a freo-kick, and Borel 1 sent the ball between the posts. Shortly afterwards Borell bnlTinntly stopped Van Heerden in fu 11 flight after the ball hud passed through the hands of Michau, Moyer, and Weepener. Another good attempt by the visitors was stopped by Day ot Plenty’s vigorous tackling. the local men also got the ball several times, but could not get far. Then Michau secured the ball, which passed in turn through the hands of Sendin, Meyer, nnd Weepener. the last-named scoring. De Villiers failed with the kick further passing bouts followed, and then Cuppies oame away smartly from n line-out. The visitors were penalised a little later, and Borell kicked a penaltv-goal. Shortly afterwards Roy Morkel marked and dropped a nice glial, equalising the scores. Van Heerden secured the ball after fine passing by Roy Morkel, Meyer, and Weepener, and scored. De Villiers converted. Ihe first spell ended with, fno score;— Springboks M Bay of Plenty ” In tho second spell, play went up and down tho ground for several minutes, and then Meyer got 4>.e ball, which h passed io Weepener to Sendin to IL Morkel, who touched down. A succession of passing bouts followed, and then the ball went through the hands of all the visitors’ backs, Sarfilin scoring q good try after a "pass in.” De Villierss attempt to goal failed. Springboks, 17; Bay of Plenty, 6. The Bay representatives were playing determinedly, despite the adverse position of the score, and towards the close of the spell Mon,gomerv obtained the ball and transferred to Kornriko, who cleverly passed to Des. The latter transferred to Borell, who crossed the line, scoring a very meritorious try. Borell took the kick himself, but missed. Two minutes later the bell rang, and the game ended:—

The New South Wales Rugby football team met tho most solid opposition experienced so far in the Dominion m i s match to-day against Marlborough. There was ideal football weather, and the conditions were favourable to a good d’isplav of Rugby. Earlv in the game it was apparent that the activity of the. Marlborough forwards in the loose would bo a factor in checking the back play of the visitors, and their passing movements were generally met with solid tack,ing. lhe first scores came to Marlborough shortly after the kick-off, but by the end of the spell the visitors had made up the leeway by attractive back play, the score lieing 11 all. In the second half the visitors added on.e converted try and a penalty-goal by Mingay. The latter thus brought his record of goal-kicking for the tour to 13 successes out of 15 attempts. In this spell the back play of the visitors was sparkling at times. Marlborough made a determined effort to increase the score, but frequent infringements spoiled several promising attacks. Tries were obtained 1 for tho visitors by Wallace Stanley (2), M‘Kay. Mingay converted on two occasions and placed a penaltygoal For Marlborough, tries were scored by Woollev, Gleeron. and Byrne. Ono was converted by . O’Brien. REPRESENTATIVE MATCH WELLINGTON BEATS WANGANUI. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, August 24. A representative Rugby game, Wellington v. Wanganui, was played here to-day in fine weather. There was a largo" attendance of spectators. Play in the early stages was even, but the visitors soon got the upper hand through good passing by their backs. At halftime Wellington led by 18 points to S. On resuming, Wanganui added a try, but from then on Wellington had matters largely their own way, and finally won by 37 points to 11. Tries were scored for Wellington by Jackson (2), Algar King, Tunnington, Standen, and Hutchinson. King converted six and potted a goal. M'Cauliffe, Potaka, and Ross scored for Wanganui, Ross converting one. INTER-COLLEGIATE TOURNEY WELLINGTON BEATEN AFTER KEEN GAME. By Telegraph.-Press Association. Wanganui, August 24. The inter-collegiate Rugby tournament was continued to-day. Christ’s College defeating Wellington College by 19 points to 11 ’ At half-time the score was 3 points each. On resuming, Wellington forced ahead, and led by 11 jxunts to 3. ]n "the concluding stages of the game. Christ’s College got the upper hand, and added sixteen points. The play was keen throughout, and both teams played good Rugbv. Ellis (2), .Grant, and Sheen scored for Christ’s College, Talbot converting two tries and kicking a penalty goal. MEETING OF NEW ZEALAND UNION THE FRENCH TOUR. Tho Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met Inst evening, Air. G. W. Slade being in the chair. 11. was stated that the Maori-Spring-boks match hail been allocated to Napier, and, in consequence, a request irom tho Manawa! u Union for the match, to bo played at Palmerston North could not bo granted. Intimation was received from the bow South Wales Rugby Union regarding the French tour. The Australian representative in England had been informed that tho date of departure of the team. May 15, appeared to be too late, as after visiting South Africa and Australia there would’be no time left to play in New Zealand. The matter is to be dealt with at a later date. The question of accommodating aoloierpatients from the AA’aipukurau Military Sanatorium at the Springboks-Hawke’s Bay match, free of charge, was referred to the Hawke’s Bay Union to arrange. WAS THERE ROU«H PLAY AND AN INQUIRY? By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, August 24. The Southland Rugby Football Union at, its weekly meeting discussed certain statements that have been made with regard to rough play in the Springboks match, in which it was stated that the play of a Southland player had been investigated. Mr. A. J. Geddes, chairman, said that he was not aware that an inquiiy had been held into the play of any Southland player, and a motion was carried drawing the attention of tho N.Z.R.F.U. to the report.of the remarks in question, and asking if the jiarent body approve of the statements, and if any inquiry had! been held that copies of the evidence bo submitted to the S.R.F.U., together with the name of the player. Should tho N.Z.R.F.U. know nothing of the inquiry it was asked to deny tho statements through tho Press.
