The game was very evenly contested, and the issue was in doubt right up until the call of time. In the first'Spell Oriental obtained a lead of 6 points—penalty-kicks by Corby and Dufty. By scoring early in the second half—an unconverted try by Tulloch—it appeared as though Oriental had the game well in hand.
