TAX ON SHIPS’ EARNINGS

AUSTRALIAN PRACTICE EXPLAINED. Melbourne, August 20. Mr. Collins, Secretary of the Treasury, referring to a cable mossage regarding the taxing of ships’ earnings, explained that it is not the practice of the Commonwealth to impose income tax on the earnings of vessels owned by British or foreign Governments; but shipowners are liable to taxation on the amount collected for the carriage of passengers, live-stock, mails, and goods shipped in Australia, the tax being assessed on 10 per cent, of tho amount received by tho owner. —Press Assn.
