NON-PAYMENT OF INCOME TAX
■AUSTRALIAN MINERS’ DECISION. (Rec. August 19, 10.5 p.m.) Sydney, August 19. The Western District miners' lodges have adopted a resolution against the payment of income tax unless tho exemption is raised to Jl3OO. In the event of the Central Council endorsing the resolution, it is intended, to approach all industrial organisations in Australia, and urge them to adopt a similar attitude. It is further proposed that should any unionist be arrested or ‘ garnisheed fox- non-payment of the tax a general strike be declared until the man is released or the garnisheed money is refunded. It Is reported from Port Darwin that six prominent Labour unionists were sentenced to a month’s imprisonment for refusing to pay income tax. —Press Assn. [The word "garnishee"-is especially applied 'in. law to a debtor who is warned by tho order of n Court, to pay his debt, not to his immediate creditor, but to a person who has obtained a final judgment against such creditor.]
