COTTON-GROWING IN AUSTRALIA
EXAMINATION OF POSSIBILITIES. London, August 18. Messrs. Crawford Vaughan, H. C. Armstrong, and W. H. Johnson, the delegation which recently completed an exhaustive examination of the cotton-growing possibilities of Australia on behalf of British interests, have presented their re ports in London. The reports emphasise the views of experts from every cotton country in the world, urging that it is extremely important that growers shall not rush into heavy production of indifferent varieties. They must exercise care in ths selection of pure. seed and the eradication of poor crops. The standardisation of varieties is necessary in order that the ginning machinery may deal with the whole of the crop. The professional services of Mr. Johnson, late Director of Agriculture in Nigeria, were engaged. Half a ton of seed specially selected in America has been shipped to Australia up to date, and ginning machinery is being purchased to deal with the next crop. A substantial amount of capital has been found for the Australian Cotton-growing Association. The Empire Cotton Corporation views fav ourably the stops being taken. Messrs. Vaughan and Armstrong are leaving shortly for America to visit the Southern cotton-growing centres. The Prime Minister is cordially co-operating in the work.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
