EDUCATION BOARD
BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING.
Messrs. T. Forsyth (chairman), R. A. Wright, A. Penny, R. M'Callum, W. T. Grundy, J. J. Clarke, A,. J. White, T. Moss, E. P. Rishworth, C. I. Harkness, and W. 11. Field were present at the monthly meeting of the Education Board yesterday. The financial statement showed the receipts since last meeting to be £32,778 6s. The payments authorised amounted to £32,486 3s. lOd. The cash in bank on current account on August 13 was £743 4s. 7d., and the amounts on deposit totalled £14,000. Government grants were due to the amount of £11,564 ss. 2d. These included the following items:— Administration, £400; school and class libraries, £285; conveyance and board, £lOBl 19s. Gd.; incidental expenses of schools, £781; Training College, £300; training classes for teachers, £200; scholarships, £2BO Ils. 3d.; manual instruction, £600; buildings, maintenance, £984 155.; buildings, rents, £359; new buildings, £5649; sites, £642 19 s. sd. The board’s proposal re additional land for playground at Mauriceville West has been approved by the Government. The Government report on a training college conference —which members had received —was sent on to the Training College Committee of Advice. The board was formally notified of Government grants of £450 for a temporary building at Mornington, and £5O additional grant for the Carluke School. The Department intimated that it declined to pay the rent of a temporary room at Karori. Marlborough Ward. On the motion of Mr. M'Callum it was decided: “That a return be prepared showing the amounts received by the board since amalgamation for tho maintenance and rebuilding of school buildings in the Marlborough ward, including the balance in hand on the rebuilding account at date of amalgamation, and the amounts spent on maintenance and rebuilding in that ward during the same period.’ The board agreed to pay the Renwick Trustees £3O for the schoolground at Renwicktown. Mr. M'Callum is to consult with the trustees at the first opportunity on tho matter of this payment. School Hours. Ths motion amending by-law 18 (dealing with school hours) passed on July 30, was confirmed on the motion of the chairman. Executive’s Recommendations. The following recommendations of the executive were agreed to: — “1. Use of school building out of school hours and insurance; that the committees which have not furnished tho information regarding tho use of school buildings out of school hours, be requested to do so immediately. "2. Accident insurance policy: That the the renewal of the policy be approved. "3. Fire inspector’s reports: That the architect furnish an. estimate of the cost of carrying out the suggestions of the fire inspector, and submit to the Department. "4. Fernridge: That Messrs. A. P. Hubbard and E. J. Rose be appointed eoniinissioners, and that Mr. Grundy be thanked for his services.
"5. Normal (piano repair): That tho necessary repairs be executed at a cost of £l5.
"6. Lyall Bay: That instead of cinders, as at first proposed, screenings be provided."
