COUNSEL'S PROTEST AGAINST CLIENT’S ARREST.

B. lea®' ‘ ( * tices of the Peace, with attempting to leave New Zealand with tho intention of failing to make adequate provision tor his wife and unborn child. Mr. J. Wiren, who appeared for tne complainant, said that on Wednesday last the accused told his wife to leave the boarding-house where they were staying, and return to her mother which she did. On the following day she heard that he had been dismissed from the Railway Department, and was goin H across to Australia. The accused camo from Australia, and last week, it was alleged, a letter was received by him from his friends on tho other side, stating that as he was returning to Australia they would not send his goods over. Mr. Hanna said that tho accused had no intention of leaving New Zealand. He was employed on the railways, and was eo employed up to the time of his nl J I tr. t Wiren said that the facts as ho had stated them were placed before tho Magistrate who signed the warrant. It was suggested by the Bench that tho case should be adjourned m order that a Magistrate might deal with it. After a short discussion, this was agreed to and Altera tor was remanded nntil Monday morning. Bail was fixed m one surety of .£25.
