LEAGUE FOOTBALL

MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby League was held last evening, Mr. F. C. Evans presiding. The following members were also present: Messrs. Burke, Jackson, Tovey, Langridge, Snow, Cranston, Cooper, Croghen, and the secretary, Mr. J. Murphy. It was arranged that the Auckland-Wellington fixture be played next Saturday on the Basin Reserve, and that the Richmond (Auckland) and Petone. North junior teams play a curtain-raiser. The New Zealand Council wrote asking for any suggestions that the local league may have to make to improve the game. A committee was set up to report later. The Canterbury League are to be asked to agree to a date later this season for the annual game unavoidably postponed. It was decided to appoint Mr. H. Tancred as coach for the representative team which will meet at Kilbirnie on Thursday evening for training. AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. Jt is some years since Auckland has sent a representative team of Rugby League footballers to play Wellington, and the game between these two rivals, which is to take place on the Basin Reserve next Saturday, is causing more than passing interest. Auckland is undoubtedly the home of. the league code ■nd that it produces such a number of star players is not to be surprised at. The team which is to play Wellington on Saturday is fully representative of Auckland form, and patrons are promised an exhibition that will fully repay them. This year Wellington is particularly strong in comparison with previous years, and although beaten at Auckland on July 30, it was the very muddy and strangely laid out ground that were mainly responsible. Tho Auckland “Star,” in reporting the game., said that "the luck was with Auckland and the spirited defence and well-sus-tained attacks of the Wellington visitors really deserved a better result than the score-board showed.” Wellington are getting the advantage of coaching from Tancred, who captained the late New Zealand team, which played in Australia, and tho team feels certain it can turn the tables on Auckland. The following is the "Wellington team: Full-back, T. Balks; three-quarters, F. Tetlev, F. Nunn, J. Shannahan; fiveeighths, "Doc" Nicholls (captain), H. Nunn; half-back. J. Kruze; forwards, L. Zimmerman, H. Harvey. R. Shannahan, W. Le Warne, 0. Haddock, J. Hedges. Emergencies: Backs, Baxter, Foley; forwards, Williams, W. Hedges.
