INDECENT ASSAULT CASE. In camera, in the Supreme Court, yesterday, before Hie Honour .Mr. Justice Reed and a jury of twelve. Thomas William Steel was charged that on June 29 last he indecently assaulted a ten-year-old girl. Mr. P. S. K. Macassey appeared for the Crown and Mr. A. B. SieVn right for tho prisoner. The offence was alleged to have been committed in the accused’s shop in Brittomart Street, while the little girl was collecting money for a church fund. The accused, denied the charge. Jle had a wooden leg. he said, and when he bent down to kies the girl, after giving her a penny, he tripped and might, have fallen against hor. He said ho was 3.1 years old. had been married for seven years, and had three children. Summing up, His Honour remarked that the case was entirely one of fact. There was no question of consent involved. Young children had to be protected. and it was essential that offences should bo stopped. The jury retired at 3.12 p.m. and returned at 3.40 p.m. with a verdict of guilty. The jury added an expression of opinion that a law should be enacted totally prohibiting children of tender years from collecting money in any shape or form. The prisoner will 'be sentenced this mornings
