Mr. Maughan Barnett, city organist at Auckland, gave a recital last evening nn tho new organ in St. James’s Presbyterian Church, Newtown. The organ, which was built to the- specification of Mr. Bernard F. Page (city organist) by Mr. H. A. Tustin, of 'Wellington, has some 1G stops, which are not yet all completed, hnd w one that is in adequate proportion to the church. It has yev to receive one slop on tho great organ and two of string* tone quality on tho swell organ,' which will, upon completion.' make an instrument of excellent type for its size- Although tho organ is a small instrument, there was ample room for more registration than that given by Mr. Barnett at his. recital last evening. The programme included a Bach "Toccata and Fugue” in D minor, n Boellman “Suite Gothique,” and a Celtic hymn- The two quasi-cndenzaS fcr pedal solo were exceedingly iyoll played. A Corelli gavotte., apparently from a violin opus, was given by Mr. Barnett with all the beauty of the period infused in it- A march, composed by the organist, was of tho conventional march type with a pronounced rhythm. "Seranatn," by "Wolstenholine. was a delicate and charming nieco by the famous blind English organist. Other works played were "Carillon and Legends (Viorne) and "Andante in D” (Silas).
