C.J.C. ACCEPTANCES. By Telnrr*Bh—Press Assoclatloa. Christchurch, August 10. The following are the acceptances for the second day of the Grand National jneeting:— iWOOLSTON HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. Six furlongs.

NOTES AND COMMENTS —— i ’ SECOND DAY OF NATIONAL MEETING. jjy Televrauh — Bnacial Onrresnoadent. Christchurch, August 10. The National mating, will be advanced b. stage to-dav. when the Grand National Hurdles will bo run. The early favourite, Alteration, has broken down, and will not start. The going will be much better to-morrow, and Giyniecook will lie an improved horse. Fisher is also expected to shape well. Multive is uow at the top. of his form, and must be difficult to dispose of. hut form ixiints strongly to Demagogue, who won the .Limners’ Flat Handicap in fast' time. He has not been a reliable horse in the past, but with the sting out of the ground he promises to race generously. , Fabrinnde. who led into the straight with Killowen in the Winter Cup, will etart in hack company to-day, and may eo too fast for the others in the Wool«ton Handicap. Bebeheud and C’arnbrae should be nrominent amongst the others. The Hunt Club Cup may go to Tigerland, who was the only one to make any Impression on Fire Enter at. the end of the Enfield Steeplechase, which was run in very fast time. Coroglen has been paid up for in the Beaufort Steeplechase, and' will probably start in that race, and not in the Hurdles. Ho has an extra 131 b. to carry, but the others are all raised, too. First Line is a good safe conveyance, and may’defeat the top weight, while John Bunnv finished fast enough in the Enfield Steeplechase to suggest that he has a chance-with nearly two stone less on his hark. Cantoris will have plenty of supporters in the Sumner Handicap, but he can expect a lot of trouble from Silent King, who ran. a grand race in tho Winter .Cup. and also from Lady Lucullus, who finished verv fast in the Avonhead Handicap. after getting off badly. Callaghan had everv chance in the Winter Cud. in which he failed badly, hut he hit the front a couple of furlongs from home, and on this form tha public may again select him os favourite in the August Handicap. The connections of Onslaught, preferred him to the actual ■winner. Clean Sweep, in the Cup, but as he finished last, something probably happened Idm in the race. He was working well before tho BMsetimr, and the race should sharpen him and, further, he tn generally seen nt his best on tho Riccarton course. . Sir Fanciful was going like a winner when ho fell in tty> Trial Hurdles, and the form evidently impressed the handicapper. as he has raised him 71b. in the Sorevdon Hardies to-day. Ha may be verv hard to bent, as up to the point where he fell on Tuesday ho had jumped well. There is a big field in the Islington Handicap., but form points strongly to Heathersnrig and Pine Arch, who were the unlucky horses in tho Winter Cup. Mouton Ivanova should also shape well. alterationjbreaks down By Telegraph — Press Association. Christchurch, August 10. Alteration, favourite for the Grand National Hurdles, has broken down, and will not be a starter to-morrow. AN APPEAL DISMISSED JUDGES UPHOLD IMPOSITION OF FINE. By Telegraph —Press Association. Christchurch, August 10. In the matter of tho appeal by Matthew Chisholm, of Otautau, against a decision of the Dunedin District Committee in confirming a fine of £5 imposed bv the Otautau Racing Club upon Chisholm, the Bacirur Conference judges (Sir Georoe Clifford. Messi's. H. A. Rusnell and O. S. Watkins) have given judgment that Chisholm, having behaved offensively to an official of the Otautau Racing Club, was rightly fined under rule 7 of nart 4 of the Rules of Racing. The iudves therefore dismiss ths appeal TROTTING METROPOLITAN CLUB’S MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, August 10. The New Zealand Metropolitan ’ Trottinji Club’s August meeting was oon-

tinned to-dav in fine ' weather. The track wu» in better order than on the opening day. but not fast. There was a large attendance. The totalisator investments were A!60,695, compared with .£59.649 10b. on the second day last year. Results: — IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. One mile and five furlongs. Manzoutu. 9sec (A.
