MANAWATU NOTES
From Our Own Oorresoondent.’ Palmerston N., August 10. The Manawatu A. and P. Association’s decision to ask for 25 per cent, of the takings for the use of their ground for the Springboks’ match against Manawatu and Horowhenua led to a suggestion that the match should foe played at Feilding, where it was stated that a ground could he got at a much more reasonable rate. Yesterday a deputation from the Manawatu Rugby Union waited upon the Ground Committee of the A anil T? Association, with the result, that fhat body has now reduced the charge to 10 per cent, of the takings. The Palmerston North Borough Council by-laws provide that cars standing on a recognised stand njust bo lighted at night. The council passed a resolution not to enforce this by-law, and notified the police to that effect.. The Police Department has now replied pointing out that its actions are governed by the motor regulations .and that these override the council’s by-laws, and provide for all cars being properly lighted when, on stands. Councillor Oram, who is.a lawver, expressed the opinion that the motor regulations dealt only with moving cars, and that the police could not deal with persons leaving their cars unlighted on a stand. He said that if the bv-law were repealed he would be prepared to defy the regulations and *eave his car on any stand without lights, and ho immediately gave notice of motion to repeal the by-law. At Die meeting of the Palmerston North Borough Council last evening it was announced that the four motor buses, for which the chassis arrived from overseas several months ago, were approach- , ing completion at Napier, where the bodies were being built, and that they might ■ be expected to be on the streets within a week or ten days. At a meeting of the General Committee or the Manawatu A. and P- Association to-day the president, who had been one of the’delegates to the Agricultural Council stated that ho Felt confident that a Koval Show would be held in the Manawatu next year, and in view of that they should go on with all the improvements to the grounds possible in the present financial stringency. Mr. A. C. Morton, who had acted as judge of the sheep dog trials at the last Winter Show-, wrote stating fhat these trials as at present carried out took up too much time, and the work shown was not of the high order tliat was ex_pectcd at such fixtures. He suggested that the association should confer with Em North Island 'Dog Trial Association, and endeavour to arrange with it to have allocated to Manawatu the effampion driving and yarding event in which none but dogs which had taken first prizes could compete. This, ho considered, would shorten ttie proceedings and heighten tho interest of the events to the public. It was resolved to act on tho suggestion. An application was received' from the. official bend of Association football for toe right io play a match on the ground on one day during the next Winter Show, and was referred to the Winter Show Committee . It was decided to join the Carterton A. and F. Association in protesting against the manner in which the list of official judges had been drawn up by the Board of -^* 1 ’ culture. It was resol'veit to have the championship Tibnons in r~i. white, and blue, as in tho past, a motion that they should lie purple Being rejected. It having been suggested at a previous meeting that the grandstand on the grounds was unsafe, a report was received to the effect that after inspection the structure had been found to bo quite sound. A discussion took place on the erection of the new horse pavilion, which had been authorised and on which work had been commenced. Some alterations were suggested in view of the possibility Royal Show 'being heTd next year, and a special committee was eet up to into the matter of Improvements Jn Fv plans. with power to act. It was resolved to charge lor fodder for stock at the forthcoming show.
