SERIES OF THEFTS BY LAD
COMMITTED TO WERAROA. A lad 15 years of ngo had four charges of theft preferred against him in tho Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Chief Detoctivo Ward said that tho lad camo to Wellington on July 4i and put up at tho People’s Palace, where a man named Allan F. Gilbert was staying. Tho next morning tho lad disappeared, and so did Gilbert’s wallet, containing £7. The youth left for Auckland that day, and on arrival in the northvrn city lie put up at an hotel, where a day or two later a man named Todd went to stay. On July 0 Todd lost £7, and tho boy had skipped. He took train for Wellington. At Frankton two men, Roselle and Stephens, got on to tho train, nnd tho lad chummed up with them, and all three stayed in one room in a city hotel. The next day Roselle discovered that his four war loan certificates had disappeared, and Stephens was minus a £l6 note. It was stated that the lad's mother was dead, and that his father appeared to lake no interest in him- . , Mr. Dinnecn, the probation omcor, stated that the bov appeared to need some control, and the Magistrate agreed. The lad was committed tn tho Weraroa training farm.
