SHEFFIELD MATCH

AUSTRALIANS ALL OUT FOR 251 GOOD BOWLING & FIELDING BY YORKSHIRE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, July 20. The weather was dull, but fine and hot, for the opening day of the Australians’ match with Yorkshire at Sheffield. The wicket was hard and fast. Yorkshire is represented by D. C. F. Burton, E. R. Wilson, W. Rhodes, P. Holmes, H. Sutcliffe, E. Oldroyd, G. G< Macaulay, A. Waddington, Roy Kilner, E. Robinson, and Allen. Mayne, Ryder, Hendry, and Carter were omitted from the Australian team. Armstrong won the toss, and Bardsley and Collins went in to the bowling of Robinson and Waddington. Off Robin* eon’s fifth ball, after Bardsley had scor* ed a single, Waddington missed Collin# at second slip off a ball that came straight at him. However, Waddington's fifth ball in the next over sent Collins’s leg stump flying, Collins not attempting to play it. Waddington had three men. fielding close in on tho leg side. Cue for 2. Macartney filled the vacancy. At 15 Holmes missed Bardsley, a distinct chance, at first slip, off Waddington. 'When. Bardsley was 4 he gave another chance in tho slips. The weather was now sunny, with slight shadows. Tha fielding was improving, and the bowling was high class, Bardsley and Macartney getting some teasers sent down to them. Kilnor went on for Robinson at 29, and he got Macartney in his first over, the batsman playing ono on. Two for 34—Bardsley 8. Andrews joined Bardsley. The latter was very cautious, and had scored 10 out of 44 for 50 minutes’ play. Macaulaywont on in place of Waddington, and off his first over Waddington, at second slip, held one from Andrews. Three for. 50. With Taylor in, Bardsley opened out, and obtained good 4’s behind the wicket and on both sides. Taylor scored 2 in twenty minutes, yet ho was hitting hard, but his strokes were smartly fielded. Rhodes went on for Kilner at 75. Tay£ lor, when ho had scored 8, was missed! behind tho wickets by Allen, the ‘ball going for 4. Immediately afterwards Bardsley edged ono from Rhodes danger* ously. The crowd was delightfully enthusiastic at the good fielding and good strokes. Wilson was cheered for stopping a terrific drive by Taylor to midon. After lunch, at 98, Wilson, who was making his first appearance since his return from Australia, took tho ball from Macaulay, and off his third delta* ory Bardsley was nearly run out. The! century appeared after ninety-two min.-* utes’ play—Bardsley- 47, Taylor 21. When Taylor had two more runs to his score he sent one hack to tho bow-, ler, and Waddington held' it. Four fop 128. The Australian captain was next, but after getting one away for a single he got his leg in front to a ball from Wilson. Five for 129. Pellow joined Bardsley, but five runs later Waddington bowled him; Six for 134. Bardsley did not remain long in company with Gregory, for when another five runs had been added he was bowled by playing back to a bailor from Wilson. His innings was patchy, and at times he was ultra careful. He hit six 4’s, and batted 160 minutes. Seven for 139. Oldfield partnered Gregory, and they took the score along until the. second loontjuTy was .passed, but at 205 tho wicketkeeper got his leg in front to one from Rhodes. Eight for 205. M'Donald stayed with Gregory until tho 250 mark was passed, when ho was. out leg-beforo, after making a useful 16. Nine for 251. Mailey was the last man, but on his arrival Waddington displaced Gregory’s stumps without any alteration to the score. During the M'Donald-Gregory partner-* ship runs came quicker than at any other period of the day. At ono stage 21 were scored n ten minutes. Gregory’s 50 took 84 minutes to* compile. Waddington and Robinson followed Rhodes with the ball, and at 239 Wilson superseded Robinson. The Yorkshire team’s ground fielding fell away after tea, but there wore instances of brilliance. The innings lasted 250 minutes. Gregory hit ten 4’s and batted 109 minutes. His innings was chanceless. The attendance had reached 15,000 when Yorkshire went in for half an. hour’s batting. Gregory and M’Donald opened the attack. The crowd cheered the early success. Both bowlers were sending ‘in tho fastest stuff, which was bumping a lot.
