PARAPARA IRON

PROGRESS OF NEW VENTURE THE WORKS AT ONAHAKA The Minister of Mines has received some interesting information concerning tho progress of operations at Onahaka, where preparations are being made by the Onahaka Iron and Steel Company for the manufacture of iron from New Zealand ore. The company, which proposes to make pig-iron from the limonite ore in the Parapara district, acquired the blast furnace and plant formerly erected at New Plymouth for the smelting of iron-sand. Tho furnace has been enlarged and installed at Onahaka. The iron ore is a surface deposit and is to to brought to the furnace by an aerial tramway over a distance of a mile and a half. The top terminal of the aerial is cut into a limestone face on one side and into iron ore on the other side. This conjunction of the required materials is stated to be unique, and the experts estimate that the ore will not cost more than 2s. a ton at the smelter. Water has been brought to the works and will be used to work an hydraulic lift for feeding the furnace. Coke ovens arc being prepared. The company aims at producing up to thirty tons of pig-iron per day, a quanilty sufficient for New Zealand’s requirements.
