COST OF LIVING. Figures issued by the Government Statistician show that New Zealand ranks fourth on the list for cost of living, tho increase being 67 per emit, over that in July, 1914. The United States is the cheapest place to live, according to the same authority, for tho increase over July, 1914, is only 55 per cent. An interesting fact is that the general superintendent of 63 large general stores operating in U.S.A, mining districts says: “Tho staple diet of.the miners used to Im beans. Now it is clearly noticeable that tho amount of beans has greatly decreased, and at the name 'time the /volume Of California canned goods purchased has tremendously increased." The Pittsburg iron workers have been indulging their fancy for silk shirts, according to tho “Pittsburg Post." In Omaha, where 10 cent meals wore a speciality in the cheap restaurants, tho tide has shifted and runs in tho direction of 50 and 60 cent meals. One thing has gone up and Is very scarce—that is, labour for charing. Thousands of women, it is said, no longer go out or take in washing, tho husbands and sons are going home with full pay envelopes. A plnco in Portland Oregon, that specialised in 5 cent beds has gone out of business.
