(Published by Arrangement.) This question was referred to in a recent address by the Government’s Electrical Expert. , He states that with the coming of the national electrical scheme, gas consumption would increase, together with the making of coal by-products World-wide experience proves that the development of electricity and the growth of gas consumption go together. Iu Wellington, for instance, the consumption of gas has increased sevenfold since the introduction of electricity. The citv of Toronto. Canada, is supplied bv current from the hydro-electric installation at Niagara, end th e Toronto Consumers' Gas Company is therefore m competition with electricity from water power. Nevertheless, the Ga s Company has made progress by leaps and bounds, and doubled its output between 1908 and 1914 The Wellington Gas Company has in its possession reports from Auckland (N.Z.), to Bergen (Sweden) which prove the same tendency. The fact is, gas has so many unique advantages that it cannot be economically replaced. Tho demand of tho public for convenient light, heat and power is so great that it has never yet been completelv satisfied. Even with a stationary population, gas consumption constantly increases; but with a fast-grow-ing iwpulation, as in At elhngton. the future growth of the gas business >• absolutely sure. Some of the suburbs such as Karori and Onslow—are not ve connected with the gas supply and therefore they provide an important field for expansion.
