MANAWATU NOTES
From Our Own Correspondent. Palmerston North, July 19.
At the meeting of the Palmerston North. High School Board last evening, it was announced that Air. John Balsillie had founded a scholarship in connection with the school in memory, of his late son an old boy of the school, who lost his’life at the’ war. The bequest was in the form of a .±.'400 bond in New Zealand inscribed stock, maturing in April, 1939. At the expiry of the present investment tho principal is to be reinvested by tho Board of Governors so as to secure and maintain the scholarship for all time. • The scholarship is to be I awarded to the pupil or pupils gaining the highest marks in the aggregate of tho term examinations in Form V, and returning to study in Form A I for at least one year. Some little time ago the committee which has in hand the raising of funds for a maternity home for Palmerston North Hospital district decided to purchase a property in Colleg’e Street, on which there is a house which is considered suitable as a beginning, and two public meetings confirmed this decision. Last week, however, a private meeting appointed a deputation io wait upon the committee to protest, against the acquirement of this particular properly, and hi* it did last evening. After the matter had been fully discussed it was decided that as two public meetings had endorsed the decision, and as the committee had already collected money on the understanding that the property was to be purchased, the request could not be granted. __________
