ARAPUNI HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME

MINISTER WILL INSPECT DAM SITE. The Minister of Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates) will pay a visit shortly to the Waikato district for tho purpose of inspecting with his engineers the site of the proposed hydro-electric station at Arapuni. Mr. Coates has not yet announced a final decision regarding the Arapuni project. Borings at the site showed that tho banks of the river at the selected point were not firm enough to permit of the dam being constructed in accordance with the original plan, and a further report by the engineers recommended the adoption of a gravity dam, involving substantial increase in cost. Detailed plans and estimates have been prepared in connection with this dam, and are in the hands of the Minister, but it appears that the question of site is siill awaiting decision.
