THE CHEQUERS ESTATE
LORD LEE’S GIFT TO THE NATION Lord Lee of Fareham, who handed over tho Chequers estate to the nation in January last as u country homo for the Prime Minister, has signified his intention of surrendering his remaining interests in farms and woodlands to the benefit of the Chequers Trust Fund, and in order to give the Ministry of Agriculture the opportunity of carrying them on as an experimental and instructional centre.
Tho total area of the farms is about 700 acres, and they will ‘be handed over, rent and tax free, with all buildings and equipment and growing crops, and a sufficient nucleus of live stock to make it a going concern. Tho area of the woodlands is about 600 acres, with a new steam sawmill. ■Sir A. Griffith-Boscawen, in acceptiig tho gift on behalf of the Ministry, said it was proposed that the main farm should be conducted ns an example of a stock-rearing farm, showing how land of that character could be improved so as to produce the maximum output of llv-* stock consistent with sound eomniereiiil agriculture. "Thinking as I do,” he added, "that the future. of agriculture in this country mainly depends upon the devel.-pm-.-nf of education and tho spread of information among tho farming community, it would give mo the greatest satisfoclion to know that for all time tho Prime Minister of the day would be able to see at his doors an example of agricultural education tn being.”
