PETONE WATER SUPPLY

o . REPORT BY INSPECTOR HUGO. The secretary of the Retone Fire Board /Sir. IV. F. Sturman) has received the following report regarding the Petone water supply pressure from Mr. T. I. Hugo, inspector of fire brigades > — "On July 11 a test was made in Petone for the purpose of ascertaining io what extent the town water supply would be augmented when the Gear freezing works'’ pumping plant is connected with pumps directly into the street reticulation. At 2.55 p.m. tho station 1 gauge showed a pressure of 441 b. A delivery was got to work in Buick Street and another in Jackson Street, when the station pressure dropped to 101 b. The pumns were started, and a gauge fixed on the stand-pipe, showed a gradually rising pressure, until at 3.15 p.m. it registered 621 b. with the two deliveries at work. At 3.30 n.m. the gauge was reI cording a standing pressure of 721 b. Duo to an oversight, the full pressure was not attained until some little time I after the pumps were first started, but from then on until the end. of the test a steady pressure of 001 b. was maintained with the pumps working at only some io per cent, of their actual efficiency, it being considered inadvisable to work them 'at a higher pressure for fear of bursting , the mains. I consider the results obtain- | ed were satisfactory to a certain extent, but better and more satisfactory results can be obtained by replacing with sixInoh pipes the present four-inch piping, some 150 ft. in length, connecting the pump delivery with the six-inch main in Victoria Street. This can be done at a reasonable cost. I "If this wore done, and telephonic communication established between the fire station and. the engine-room of the freezing works, I consider tho question of purchasing a motor fire pump might remain in abeyance, for the time being, at any rut a."
