MECHANICAL HANDLING IN WAREHOUSES
One of tho moat complete equipments in the world, for tho handling of goods ia to bo found at the. warehouse of the port of Manchester (Englund). It includes cranes, electric runways, gravity conveyors, electric buttery trucks, and electric “tiering” devices. The gravity conveyor consists of an inclined plane with rollers down which crates and other packages can be slid. It In a portable form, and by means of it as many as three thousand packages can be dealt with in one day. The tiering machine is used for stacking bales of cotton, cases of lemons, and similar packages. A vertical ladder-like arrangement carries a horizontal platform, which is raised and lowered by means of an electric motor. The whole machine can be moved from one place to another, and it is capable of lifting a load of 15001 b. The electric runways consist of overhead rails, from which hang electric grabs, which pick up casks, and so on, and transport them to the place of storage, in a minimum of time.
