SHIP VERCINGETORIX IN PORT. The French ship Vercingetorix arrived in port early yesterday morning, and berthed later at the King's Wharf. She is from Noumea and Papeete, and left the latter port on June 8. Twelve days later she was off Cape Palliser. but very bad weather wan met with, and tt was found necessary to go north about. She went round New Zealand tn 15 days, and came in from the westward. The weather was very bad. and for the past eight or nine days Captain Iloulbecq was forced to remain an deck. No damage, however, was done to the vessel. The Vereingetorix is a full-rigged ship, built in 1902 at St. Nazaire. She is of 2273 tons gross and 1988 tons net. Her length is 281 ft.. her beam 40.7 ft., and her depth 2? 7ft. The Vereingetorix is smaller than the ’ocally-owned Ilcwa. which is of 2999 tons gross and a length of 309.6 ft. She has onlv three masts, while the Bewa is n. four-masted vessel of the baroue type. The Vereingetorix. like the Rewa is to load wool in New Zealajid for London. She comes to the agency of Mr. L. G. F Zohrab. and loads for the West Coast Farmers’ Freight Reduction Organisation. The vessel already' has her aboard, and will be able to commence loading almost immediately.
REAPPEARANCE OF OLD-TIME CLIPPER A real old-time clipper has reappeared In the famous Antie.pe. which was launched in IBM. and two years later wonld have broken the record to Melbourne had she not been delayed for ten days in the dob drums, says the ‘‘Manchester Guardian. The Antiope has had a wonderful career. She was originally designed for the carrying of wool, and later drifted into the Canadian lumbering trade by way of South American nit rates. In the meantime being captured, under the Russian flag by the Jananep.e while attempting- to run their blockade. The outbreak of war found her a coal hulk In New Zealand, but she was refitted, and after a voyage or two was wrecked near Bluff Harbour. She was pounding in the surf for over threo months, but eventually she was salved and earned her original cofit several times over when tonnage was worth no much. Recently she came to grief again on the East African coast, but now she is once again seaworthy, and is reported to have been chartered to be towed -from Lorenzo Marques to Beira with a cargo of coal a-nd to he as fit for sea as ever she was. except that eho is need of a new suit of sails. PAPAROA FROM AUCKLAND. The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Paparoa in expected to leave Auckland on Friday for -Wellington, via Whakatane. She is dua here about Weflnefiday. lONIC AT SOUTHAMPTON. The S.S. and A. liner lonic, which sailed from Wellington on June 4, arrived at Southampton on Sunday afternoon. PORT KEMBLA FOR LONDON. The C. and D. liner Port Kembla !■ timed to sail for London at noon to-day. She will take the following passengers:— Misses Jackson. Banks, Messana, Mcsdames Beavis, Jackson, and Messrs. Turnbull, Beavis, and fihrimpton. KIA ORA’S MOVEMENTS. The S.S-. and A. liner Kia Ora is expected to leave New Plymouth on Friday tor Wanganui, from which port ehe will come to Wellington. She is due hero about July 28, and should sail the following day for Australia and London. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. C. Robinson, first mate of the Zita, has left that vessel. Mr. C. A. Mitchell has signed on the Corinna as assistant nurser. Mr. J. IV. Murray has joined the Tahiti as s.ecoud mate. THE TROUBLES OF SHIPOWNERS. The London correspondent of tho Christchurch “Press” states;—Owing to labour troubles in New Zealand it is found difficult to put vessels into regular rotation—indeed, a. few weeks ago an interval of a week elapsed during which there was no regular liner of the Shaw. Savill, and Ablioii Company in British ports, an event which has not happened for many years. In due course they will doubtless arrive in a bunch and have to lie idle awaiting a cargo. This is evidently one of many troubles. After prolonged negotiations it has been arranged to carry cheese at lid. per lb. plus 10 per cent. Rut shipowner* are still of the opinion that this is an exceedingly generous rate, and, is something in the nature of patriotism rather than business. As an example, of what has to be faced at the present time, it is stated that a certain vessel recently made the return trip at a loss of £15.000. On the outward journej' it was carrying a lull complement of third-class passengers, and on the homeward journey it had a normal cargo; vet this loss resulted without making any allowance either for depreciation of interest. Fortunately, this is not the case on every voyage, or else they could be only one ending to the shipping business. It is evident, however, that the immigrant passenger trade Is not very remunerative. For one thing, the layK 9 number of stewards carried out to New Zealand have to be brought back again, during which time they are dowg little or no work, being fed, and drawing their full wages. Tho following steamers were expected to he within range of the undermentioned wireless stations last night: Awanui Maindy Lodge. Kaituna, Rakanoa. Kauri, Kaiapoi. Koromiko. Auckland-West Hepburn, Ruahine, Katoa, Arahura. Canadian Skirmisher. Wellington-Maori. Mararoa, Mapourika. Tahiti, Tarawera. Port Caroline. Kanna. Kaikoura, Kia Ora. Awarua—Kananui, Donald M'Kay, Eastern Crown, Kaitoke, Lepanto. _., . The Kennedy is due on Friday from Foxton, and if sufficient cargo is offering will be dispatched on Saturday for that P< The Calm is due on Friday from Bluff to load for Lyttelton, Timaru. and DunCd The John has ben delayed owing to being bar-hound at Wanganui., but is expected here to-day. She is timed to sail later for Dunedin. Tho Komata is now due to-day _trcm Weatport. She will not sail fo- cstport again until The Moeraki went out to the stream vesterdav, and will lay up there. From Wanganui the ( -. or + o . na . u ® lx A p to Wmsf Haven to load timber for WeiU On°fiaturday the Mararoa will until 8.15 p.m. on account ax the iootnau is expected to sail to-day for Picton, and will return about the end or the week. _
