ITio fortnightly meeting of the Wesley Church Literary and Debating Society was held on Friday night, when an interesting lecture was delivered by Mr. 11. E. Edwards on "Early New Zealand.” Mr. Edwards gave a brief outline of tho manner in which tho country was first settled and of the difficulties and hardships experienced by tho pioneers. At the request of tho meeting lie proceeded to deal more particularly with tho history of Port. Nicholson, tracing the development of the settlements at Petone and tho different parts of Wellington. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded to Mr. Edwards and Mr. C. Freeman (who was in the chair).

The Hinemoa reached LytteHoQ on Saturday morning from WBTftngton. She is due to sail to-day for Godley Head and Akaroa, thence tvla Moeraki and Dunedin to her round of tho southern lighthouses.
