WINTER RACES

TRENTHAM MEETING COALITION A CHAMPION GLADFUL SUCCESSFUL ! 'A high wind blew all day at Trentham 'on Saturday, but the rain kept oft', with the exception of a light shower of a low minutes’ duration late in tho afternoon. A big crowd again turned out to eeo the racing, and included in It was the ViceRegal party. Lord Jellicoo took a lot of Interest in the racing, and ho was specially impressed with the very fine performance of Coalition in carrying such a big weight to victory in the Wellington Steeplechase. After the race he sent one of his aide-de-camps to congratulate the Owner, Mr. Erie Riddiford. Generally speaking, the first day’s form worked out well, and there were some Very good finishes seen during the afternoon. Coalition was the fittest horse mnongst the 'chasers who contested the big race, and at no stage did he put a foot wrong. The jumping of tho whole field was good until the last six furlongs, when the field was 'beginning to tire, and this was particularly noticeable with Omahu and Mattock. Sturdee was un-

lucky to lose his rider on the flat, and Master Strowan Tan off after half of the journey had been covered. Tho sum of £85,416 was put through the machine, making .£149,392 for the meeting, as compared' with £164,628 at tho Winter meeting twelve months ago. On the second day last year £96,139 passed, through the totalisator. The stand accommodation again proved (altogether inadequate, end the opinion Was expressed' that the club should push lion with its rebuilding scheme at the 'earliest opportunity. The totalisator aci’commodation at the ton shillings machine and also on the outside is fur below retjuirements, and many hundreds of pounds were shut out on each race. Tho meeting passed off without a hitch i®f any kind, and there were no inquiries : by tho Judicial Committee. The secretary, Mr. A. E. "Whyte, and hie assistant, ■Mr. J. M. Griffiths, had everything in cmooth working order and once again : the events were got off right to tho ad- . vertised time. The second train, which left the course after the last race, deposited its big load at Lambton Station S>y 5.5 p.m. Simon, Hyttus, The Baronet, and Hal’low declined their engagements in the Talavera Hurdles. Demagogue was tho /üblio choice. At the start Sweet Tipperary and Ruddy led, and they set a fast pace from the favourite and Te Oro. At the five furlongs Sweet Tipperary gave way, and Te Oro joined Ruddy at the bottom of the straight. He was first over the last fence, but Dick then came along with a good run, and finishing stoutly he won by two lengths from Te Oro, with Sir Agnes half a dozen lengths away. Ruddy and Demagogue were the next to finish. All started in the Liverpool Handicap,, Tari 'being the best backed, with Mustard Rot second choice. At the start Weldona and Tari carried on the running to the course proper, where the favourite fell back. Weldone was then left in charge, but Mustard Pot passed him shortly afterwards, and after a good finish the • top weight won by a length from Weldone, with Dainty Step a head in front of Probate. All started in the Hack Steeples, Silent Dick being made a good favourite. At the first fence Pokanekane ran off, and John Bunny followed suit at the halfmile. Silent Dick and Yankee Jack were In charge most of thq way, and in tho finish the favourite came away and won comfortably from Malincourt, who headed off Yankee Jack in the run to the post. Chummy and Golden Glade finished next. The judge hoisted the number of Pokanekane, who had finished in front, though he only jumped one fence. There was a demonstration from the crowd, which was followed by cheers some time later when the correct numbers were hoisted. ' Passenger and No Bother were the public selections for the Crofton Handicap, Lord Desmond being withdrawn. Rebuff led down tho back, but at the half-mile Cantoris took charge, and was in front in furlong from home, but Hallowvonia finished' well and beat him by a couple lof lengths. Lady Luoullus was the same distance away in third place and then caino Sir Wai. Thon came tho big Steeplechase, the ; eleventh-hour scratchings being Lochella, Multivo, Luperino, Kohinahina, and , Chummy. The public was decided in its opinion, and favouritism rested baI tween tho Vallance bracket and Coali- ‘ tion. Prom a good l start Oakleigh took charge, and led over tho first fence from i Luke, Sturdee, and Master Strowan, Co- ‘ nlition and Omahu bringing up the rear. Passing the" half-mile Oakleigh ■ was ten lengths in front of the bracketl ed pair, ■with the others bunched. The i, leader went very wide at the straight . entrance, but ho was still clear at the stand double, Paddington Green and Eirst Lina being next, and Master Strowan in tho rear. Tho Auckland ■yhorso again ran. wide at the top turn, ' and Master Strowan ran off at the next ' fence. Down the back tho positions were unchanged, but at the five furlongs Sturdee joined the leader and headed him in tho run to the haystack. Coalition and Omahu moved up across the bottom. At the stand double Standee was well clear, but Coalition and Omahu now moved up. After landing over the top fence Sturdee fell on the flat. Omahu was now in charge, but at the seven furlongs Coalition joined him, and, outjumping him at tho next fence, tho top weight took charge. At the haystack Mattock, Omahu, and Luke were all chasing him, but tho leader was well clear entering the straight, Mattock and Omahu having spoilt their chances by bad jumping. Once over tho last fence Luke put in a challenge, but the leader held his own, and won by three lengths from Luke, with Omahu several lengths away. Eirst Line was next, and then came Mattock. Paddington Green fell at tho bottom of tho course. The winner had a great ■reception from tho crowd, who recognised tho merit of his performance under such a big weight. He jumped well nil tho way, and once Sturdee was out of the way ho nover looked like getting beaten.

The whole of the twenty-three acceptors lined out for the Winter Oats, Strategy and Arch Salute being the favourite selections, but several of the lightweights were well backed. At the start Sylvan and Income were the quickest to begin, but Verbosity soon took charge, only to give way to Counterstroke, who led to the half-mile. Here lie gave way to Arch Salute, Kareao, and Battle Knight, who were in a lino at the entrance. Over the final furlong Miss Muriel shot out, and' at the finish won by throe lengths from Kareao, who boat Arch Salute by a neck. Kilgour was fourth, and then came Sylvan and Battle Knight. All started in the Final Hurdles. Sea Do’il was the actual favourite, but there was plenty of support for Hyginas, Penury Rose, and Gladful. Hyginas and Penury Rose took charge at the start, and set u fast pace, stringing out the hold. With a mile to go Gladful took third place, and* at the six furlongs Hyginas fell back and Penury Rose continued on alone. Filtering the straight Gladful headed Penury Rose, but they jumped the last fence together, and in a punishing finish Gladful won by a nock, with Sea Tha'il six lengths away. Multivo finished fourth, and Mania hera was next. Gladful has been facing consistently of late, but without much luck, and his win was well received. Sea De’il did not race aa wall an was expected, and. probably ho is

feeling ihe effects of the racing he has been doing lately. Some very spirited speculation was indulged in on the concluding event. Chant Royal was tho early favourite, but heavy late-hour investments sent Deucalion out a bettor favourite. Fabrinad® was also well backed, as was Royal Mac. A good start saw Chant Royal and Fabrinado tho quickest to begin, but Deucalion was in command as they raced into tho course proper. Onco in a lino for homo Eisteddfod, who had been handy all the way, came through, and he won comfortably from Deucalion, who had to be flogged out to beat Fabrinnde. Lord Desmond was running on fourth, and then camo Chant Royal, who stopped badly over the last furlong. The winner is trained by S. Waddell, and has previously won on the same course. He is owned by Mr. H. M. Campbell, who is at.present in England.
