ISLAND MANDATES

NEW PROBLEM FOR NEW ZEALAND FRANCHISE PRIVILEGES FOR SAMOANS By Telegraph—Preue Association—Copyright London, July 15. Mr. Massey, at the luncheon of the Empire Producers’ Association, referred to the new problem of New Zealand’s island mandates, and mentioned the success which had resulted from giving the Maoris the franchise and all its privileges. It would be exactly the same with the Samoans, who were of the same intelligent race. Empire preference, he said, was more needed than ever now that Britain was a debtor country. He believed that wool prices would recover in a few years. Eight countries had now 289 million sheep, as compared with 054 millions ten years ago. The demand would soon overtake the supply. Ho hoped the Disarmament Conference would succeed, but the British Navy must be second to none in order to ensure the integrity and safety of the Empire.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
