STATE SUPPLY OF SCHOOL BOOKS
CENTRAL CHAMBER OPPOSES SCHEME. Following tho interview with a deputation of booksellers and stationers which waited upon the council of the Central Chamber of Commerce a week ago, the council at yesterday’s adjourned meeting passed rile following motion'That the chamber opposes tho proposal that the State ,-hould undertake tho supply of school books until it is clearly shown that (I) th? selling price, including the overhead charges, will be less than at present; (2) tho system of distribution will be more efficient than exists at the present time.” In the course of a brief discussion, Mr. C. J. Ward said that curious things happened in the bonk trade. Not so long ago girls attending tho Girls’ Collcg? were asked to get a certain book, which was not obtainable at any shop save one, nnd when they went there they were told by the shopman that ho was pledged only to supply that particular Ixiok to boys attending the Wellington College, so the girls had to get tho boys to buy their books for them. This was not a tale —it happened in the case of his own girls, who had to get boys attending college to buy for them. This was a matter he wonld have asked Inst week’s deputation about had he been present.
