For the month of May last the Lower Hutt Borough Council purchased from Petone 2,975,000 c.f. of gas, of which quantity 1,992,100 c.f. were sold for domestic purposes, 181,200 c.f. for power, and 86,400 c.f. for street lighting. 'The unaccounted-for gas amounted to 24.01 per cent. "The heavy percentage of un-accounted-for gas,” stated the borough engineer (Mr. E. A. Qumbley) in his report to the council last evening, "is accounted for by serious leaks, two of which wero located in Riverbank Street, " iiieh were discovered last month. The first one proved io be a bn joint, and further investigation in the same street disclosed the fact, that one of the main pipes was broken right through. Upon clearing tha pipe 1 found that immediately under the point of traction tho maFn had been laid upon an old stump. A serious amount of settlement evidently occurred in the ground on the northern side of the stump with the result that the main fractured. Tho third leak, which was discovered in Myrtle Street, was, however, not a serious one, being only a broken service connection.”
