HOURS IN FURNITURE TRADE

By Telegraph.—Prefs Association. Auckland, July 9. Judgment in the application for an order amending tho United Furniture Trades’ Award, by fixing tho hours of work on a graduated sccale to lessen unemployment by reducing hours, was delivered in tho Arbitration Court by Mr. Justice Frazer. The judgment stated that the application had much to commend, it, but the matter could only bo arranged by individual employers with their employees. The position was complicated by tho fact that tho slackness of business was not experienced to the same degree bv all branches of the trade, or by all firms engaged in an industry. Difficulties also would arise in respect to the transfer of city and country workers' under such a system if the amendment were to apply to tho whole district. I'lie Court gave the secretary of th« union every credit for the time and thought ho had given to formulation of the scheme. It recognised with appreciation the spirit,,of..e?lf-sacrifigg v actuated members of the union in making tho application to the Court. Hv commended to tho employers for careful and sympathetic consideration the desirability 'of relieving the situation disclosed by tho adoption of a re-adjust, ment of hours where possible.
