The acuteness of the unemployment problem has been reflected in several ways during the last few days (states the Auckland “Star” of Friday). It is stated that of the 1660 members of tho Waterside Workers’ Union only 181 were employed: during the present week. Tho memborahip of the union increased during "the last four months from 1300 to 1600. Tho annual' election of officers of the union, which’ is to take place in about a fortnight’s time, is already exciting the interest of members. The stream of applicants 'tor work has iue creased during tho last few days at the Government Labour Bureau, 15 more being recorded on Thursday, ns against, six the previous day, and six had been added up to 1 p.m. on Friday. A fair section of these are young men who have been used to light work in factories. The bureau is taking advantage of ■every available source Io place the men, but very little impression is being made on tho total, for as fast -is parties are sent to employment, fresh applications come forward. Arrangements are being made nt the present time from this source to dispatch 18 men for the extended relief work operations at Tapu, Gumtown. in the Thames district, and for an additional 18 to tho same destination next week. Already about 50 men are engaged on these relief works.
